The Prison Service News of HM Prison Service ran an article in their April/May Issue Number 236 last year on identifying signs of hate which included three Pagan symbols. A Pagan corrections officer who had worked for HM Prison Service for 8 years, Adam Pamment, sent me a copy of this. After discussing it with me, Adam responded to this article. In PSN’s October 2005 issue number 240, HM Prison Service published Adam’s excellent article “Witch Guide to Paganism” to clear up any misconceptions. “People should be very careful to label a prisoner or member of staff racist because of Pagan tattoos, or anyone such as Pagan chaplaincy staff who may be sporting Pagan jewellery,” Pamment writes, “Paganism is a faith of love, respect and kinship for the whole of nature (including the human bits) and a very small number of prisoners who seek to pervert out symbolism should not be the excuse for a Witch hunt against anyone.” Officers of Avalon would like to thank Adam for his courage in standing up for the rights of Pagan staff and inmates. We’d also like to commend HM Prison Service for demonstrating their support of multi-culturalism and diversity. |
